Emotional Intelligence and Teams
At what point does a “group” become a “team”? According to researchers, that shift happens when two things are present—common goals and interdependence in tackling those goals. And they say emotional intelligence (EQ) is more important than IQ whenever people work together towards a common goal. This includes two parts:
- the capacity to know oneself, one’s feelings, and motivations
- to understand and relate well to co-workers and colleagues
Understanding the nine styles of the Enneagram at work allows us to engage each person’s motivation to bring their full enthusiasm, their most brilliant thinking and creativity to achieving the team’s goals.
The Enneagram helps us to both understand ourselves and to see others as living systems, ready to collaborate with us. It provides insight into how nine personality types instinctually, emotionally, and intellectually live out their core motivations—boosting a team's EQ and effectiveness.
This is the beauty of fully human teams.
"Shay’s Enneagram workshop helped me dive deeper into myself and my type. I’ve studied the Enneagram personally for the past five years and was expecting an intro-level review - this workshop exceeded my expectations! I learned more about my type, wings, and how I relate with others in this workshop than I could have learned from a book. Shay also provided great resources so that I can continue this journey even after the workshop."

Make it voluntary. Inner work is a deeply personal journey. Creating this opportunity for your team members is the best decision you could make! But, we’ll never force anyone to participate. The level of engagement is up to each individual team member.
Make it fun and spacious. Diving deep into personality, and all of the insights that can bring up, can easily zap your energy—emotionally, mentally, and physically. Plan to do something light and fun (or send everyone home early to process) after our workshop together.
Make it comfortable, collaborative, and intimate. Regardless of your team’s makeup, all of us have three basic instincts: self-preservation, social, and one-to-one. Nurture your team’s instincts for the day by:
- ensuring they're comfortable, fed, and hydrated (why not have lunch delivered?)
- providing opportunities for collaboration—we'll bring activities to cover this!
- giving them an opportunity to energetically connect on a more personal and creative level
“One of our deepest unconscious patterns is the false belief that we already know ourselves well enough to understand why we think, feel, and act the way we do.”
— Beatrice Chestnut
Frequently Asked Questions
I’d love to work with you, how do we get started?
The first step is to get you on the schedule! Once you let me know a little about your team and what your unique dynamic is, I’ll send you 3-4 dates to pick from.
Do you require payment upfront?
I require a 50% non-refundable deposit to book your Enneagram for Teams retreat. The remaining balance is due 48 hours before your live virtual workshop.
What do you need from me?
I’ll need details like: your business name, location, contact information, timeline, and team size. It’s also helpful to know if you’re more interested in communication, creativity, focus, problem-solving, inner work, or another theme. This helps me to tailor your workshop specifically to your team’s needs!
How long is an Enneagram team retreat?
You have half-day (3-4 hours) or full-day (6-7 hours) options. The level of depth we're able to accomplish will depend on how much time you're able to invest in. If you're interested in specific topics, let me know and I can make a recommendation on how much time we'll need.
What can I expect after scheduling?
Once your deposit is paid and we have a date set, I'll ask for a contact list with your team members' names, mailing addresses, and email addresses so I can send them their assessment and materials. We'll schedule typing sessions with each individual team member at their convenience. And once all your team members have had their session, we’ll be ready for your retreat!
Is there a cancellation fee?
I understand that things come up. If you need to reschedule, please let me know right away so I can get you back on the schedule for another date. I require a 2-week notice for any need to reschedule. While there isn’t a cancellation fee, you will lose your deposit if not rescheduled in enough time.
What should I plan to bring?
Just yourself! I’ll supply the facilitation, guidebooks, activity materials, and virtual environments for your team retreat. If you're a super cool boss, you'll plan to have lunch delivered to your team members wherever they're zooming from.
Hi, I'm Shay.
a curious creative + strategic soul
In thirteen years of doing creative work for everyone from food bloggers and shops to Silicon Valley startups to global intergovernmental organizations, there's at least one thing I've come to truly know: we are all tender mammals with evolutionary potential.
It's easy to sum up my work into terms like "branding" and "strategy," but what I really love to do is crack open the ways we stay small and contained—to reveal new unexplored opportunities to embrace our full humanity.
I've been honored to work with clients like Michael Hyatt, Marie Forleo, Peter Enns, and Pinch of Yum, but honestly what I'm really interested in is you, who you are, and what you're going to do next.
Because it's important: you should know that I'm a certified Enneagram practitioner and I regularly invest in my own inner work and professional development around the Enneagram—this is a perfect opportunity for you to capitalize on my insatiable curiosity and get support for your own growth path!
